Cat wet food

Wet cat food: What is the best choice?

Whether a cat is a gourmet or an omnivore, what ends up in its bowl is important for its well-being. Of course, it's not just about a full stomach being a happy cat. Maintaining good health is of paramount importance. Wet food plays a particularly important role when it comes to providing the best possible nutrition for your feline friend.

Good wet cat food: What owners need to pay attention to

What's inside matters: Wet cat food is characterized by high-quality ingredients. As carnivores, cats primarily need animal protein. Therefore, a very high meat content is essential in wet cat food (e.g., chicken, beef, duck, lamb, or turkey)! The question of quality is thus paramount. ANIfit sources its meat exclusively from Sweden – the country with the highest animal welfare standards in Europe – or uses organic meat from Bavaria. However, if the recipes include grains or plant-based ingredients, the percentages should definitely be low. This ensures that (hidden or known) allergies are kept under control. High-quality wet cat food contains no unnecessary additives or palatability enhancers such as sugar or artificial colors. These are sometimes harmful or allergenic – and simply offer no nutritional benefit.

Another criterion when choosing cat food is consistency. Cats (usually) prefer a soft texture. This makes the food easy for them to digest and their bodies can absorb it without problems. However, ultimately, the cat should decide for itself. Some cats prefer a firmer consistency. The reason: Chewing with more effort is more in line with their natural instincts.

Cat nutrition: What makes the difference

It's all about the mix: Regular wet food and the very best wet food for cats differ in the quantity and balance of the recipe: meat, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids in the right proportions – but above all, tailored to the specific needs of the cat. The most important criteria here are age, health status, and special dietary requirements (e.g., allergies or obesity). Owners can recognize the difference primarily by the fact that the ingredients are listed in detail on the packaging.

Wet cat food contains several important ingredient groups that have a positive effect on your feline friend's health. The ANIfit experts refer to these as:

  • Wet food should contain crude protein, ideally from animal sources. This protein is extremely important for muscle building and maintenance, immune function, and the cat's energy balance.
  • The crude fat content is also important. Such fats serve as an energy source and also support the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
  • Of course, a balanced mineral content is also essential. Cat owners should pay particular attention to the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio (approximately equal). This strengthens bones and kidney function.
  • Last but not least, wet food must also contain essential vitamins and amino acids (such as taurine) as well as carbohydrates. This contributes to heart health, eyesight, and overall vitality.

Dry food vs. wet food: Which is better for a cat?

Cat owners often face the question: dry or wet food?

Using wet food is always the better solution. Even for pet owners who have to leave their beloved pet alone during the day: automatic feeders ensure the best possible portion of wet food while you're away.

  • The best wet food contains a high water content. This high moisture content generally aids absorption. This is especially important for cats, who naturally drink little. Wet food thus also helps prevent urinary tract diseases.
  • Wet food is more beneficial for cats prone to weight gain: 100 grams contain only a small amount of calories.
  • Wet food is usually grain-free and carbohydrate-free. This reduces the likelihood of digestive problems.

High-quality wet cat food: What you should look for when buying it

This article has already listed what makes high-quality wet food for cats. However, there are other factors to consider when buying wet food. The food should also be free of artificial additives, colorings, and preservatives. It's also important that the taurine content is listed on the packaging. Speaking of packaging: wet food should be well-packaged – ideally in cans, trays, or pouches. These can easily be refrigerated for extended periods. Pouches are often portioned to provide enough for one meal. However, once opened, the packaging must be refrigerated and consumed within 24 hours.

Feeding recommendations: How much food does a cat need – and when?

The question of the optimal amount of food often leads to discussions among pet owners. It actually depends on several factors, but especially on a cat's weight and age. It's also important to remember that all amounts must be divided into several meals throughout the day. An ANIfit specialist will be happy to provide you with detailed advice on feeding frequency.
